Three Wheel Electric Scooter for Travel

Travel mobility versions of the three wheel electric scooter are purpose engineered for portability.  A 3 wheel electric scooter for travel can be folded easily and brought along for use in situations where it’s just too far to go on foot.

That’s why they can be life changing for travelers, cruisers, active people, socialites, nature lovers, RV campers and shoppers alike. They can go places with the user that a heavier, larger scooter just can’t go without using a trailer or a lift.

Many 3-wheel electric scooters have long lasting lithium batteries which offer long range, short charge times and certification clearance to bring along on most airlines.

Our Family Experience

In our family, the purchase of a three wheel mobility scooter for travel was transformative– My wife’s father Bob suffered from limited mobility due to spinal stenosis.

Walking longer distances had become a serious and painful ordeal for him and as a result had begun to withdraw from active life, and was spending far too much time at home.

Convincing him to use a mobility scooter was met with a lot of resistance at first and it was only after we found one for him that he said “looked cool” he was willing to give it a try.

Our family life changed for the better right away…

Bob Loved his new Three Wheel Electric Scooter!

Bob was once again participating in most of the family outings, getting out of the house more and enjoying social life.

He planned day trips and vacations with his wife Marilyn that previously weren’t possible.

He resumed his weekly shopping trips to Costco, and enjoyed how often people stopped him to chat about his scooter.

To our surprise, he joined us for activities that he’d never done before, like exploring local parks, campsites, and along paved paths by the beach.

Bottom line, he was much happier and so were we.

Bob’s success inspired our entry into the travel mobility scooter business in 2016 and for the next 3 years until Covid we were busy offering test drives and demonstrations in every health and trade show we could find.

People were very excited to share the news of this product with their friends and families.

Covid has made self care and getting out of the house more important than ever- See more https://northof49wellness.com/making-self-care-a-priority/

Over those 3 years we learned from the feedback of 1000’s of people what is most important for the user-

It’s all about getting the basics right.

Getting the Basics Right

Can They Safely Lift a 3 Wheel Electric Scooter?

The #1 goal for a three wheel travel electric mobility scooter is portability.

This is the one simple yet very important question that must be answered before looking any further.

They have to be able to lift it out of the car and set it up themselves or, if they have a travel companion then they should be able to.

The flexibility to bring the mobility scooter along wherever they are going depends on true portability.

Can they lift it? Three wheel electric scooters are not for everyone and that’s why this is the most important point.

Good news is that there are some lightweight options that may help most people find one that works.

3 Wheel Electric Scooters are Lighter

While investigating weight, the term & measurement to look for is called the heaviest part.

This refers to the heaviest portion of the scooter once folded down or disassembled for transport.

If that term is not listed, it’s possible that the total weight of the scooter is the heaviest part.

Here is an example of the specifications of a three wheel electric scooter-

Capacity Top Speed Driving Range Heaviest Part Turning Radius
300 lbs 7 mph 12.5 Miles 27 lbs 26 in

So, how light should it be?

One simple test is to try the weight at home first to check if the heaviest part is manageable.

Find a familiar item of close to the same weight as the heaviest part at home to try lifting.

Or use a few 4 litre(I gallon) milk or water jugs. They weigh about 8.8 pounds each.

Distribute the weight evenly from left to right so that all the correct muscles are used, not just on one side of the body.

A successful test lift in and out of the car’s trunk, or onto a coffee table and back down simulates loading and unloading the scooter.

Below, are some weights using the milk jug example of the heaviest part of some popular three wheel electric scooters.

** Remember to lift with your legs, not your back and please consult your doctor first before trying this if you’re unsure.

Don’t overexert. If unsure of proper lifting technique please review these steps https://myhealth.alberta.ca/Health/pages/conditions.aspx?hwid=hw206944

Is the 3-Wheel Electric Scooter Easy to Set up?

Spending a lot of time bent over at the back of the car assembling a mobility scooter could be frustrating and sore.

Consider choosing a model that comes apart and goes together easily and that doesn’t have too many pieces.

Fewer pieces also means less chance of losing something important (and, expensive to replace).

Keep it simple- you’ll be so glad you did. Especially those days when the weather isn’t playing nice, or when time is an issue.

Review videos that run in real time on the products setup to get realistic understanding of set up and pack down.

3 Wheel Electric Scooters

Best Turning Radius

What is a Turning Radius?

The turning radius of a 3 wheel electric scooter refers to the amount of space it takes for the scooter to turn completely around in a circle.

The shorter the turning radius, the better able the 3-wheel folding mobility scooter is in situations where there is limited space to turn.

If the turning radius is short, then the rider can more easily navigate smaller spaces like elevators, bathrooms, medical offices and stores.

A three wheel electric scooter with a short turning radius reduces the need to back up as frequently in crowds.

When traveling with a folding mobility scooter, the smaller turning radius means that it can be used to go more places.

3 Wheel Mobility Scooters Have Ample Leg Room

This feature is a great advantage for taller riders, people with injuries, casts or compression boots.

Anyone who is uncomfortable with keeping their legs bent and stationary should feel better on a 3 wheel mobility scooter.

The front wheels ability to rest between the feet of the rider means a more comfortable ride overall.

Best quote we’ve heard:

It’s like the difference between coach and business class on an airplane”.

Check that the seating position can be adjusted as well to accomodate taller or shorter riders.

Having ample leg room is as important as the electric mobility scooter having a comfortable and supportive seat.

Are 3 Wheel Mobility Scooters safe?

Safety of design should be priority when shopping for both three wheel mobility scooters and in 4 wheel mobility scooters.

The width of the wheelbase (distance between the rear wheels) in both cases are a factor in whether or not a scooter is “tippy”.

The narrower the wheelbase, the less stable the scooter will be. The wider the wheelbase, the more stable.

Here’s a feature we highly recommend:

Adjustable Rear Axles

There are popular and good quality 3 wheel mobility scooters that deliver both lightweight and stability.

They combine the light weight of 3 wheel electric scooters with the wider wheelbase stability of larger & heavier 4 wheel scooters.

It’s a smart scooter design- adjustable rear axles.

This feature allows the total width of the scooter to be adjusted to the requirements of various environments.

The wider the wheelbase selected then the more stable the three wheel electric scooter will be side to side.

**NOTE: The single biggest factor of the riders safety is …The riders proper use of the scooter. The rider must be in control and exercise caution when in public spaces and at home at all times. Learn and be certain of the safety requirements and best practices provided by the manufacturer before purchasing any scooter.

Rider Weight on a Three Wheel Electric Scooter

This is another common question and a very important consideration- How much weight can it handle?

For safety and warranty do not exceed the maximum weight limits set by the manufacturer.

Here’s a 3 wheel electric scooter that carries up to 350lbs with a heaviest part of 29lbs.

Here’s another 3 wheel electric scooter that carries up to 250lbs, with a heaviest part of only 27lbs

Research the weight capacity carefully as it is important for both comfort and safety.

Note that baggage and other items carried on the scooter count toward the maximum weight limit.

Other Three Wheel Electric Scooter Considerations

There are a few other considerations like cost, accessories, controls, free shipping, warranty etc.,

We think you’ll find though that with the basics we covered here, then it should be a great experience.

Have fun, seek adventures and stay safe.
